Permutable Artwork

A permutable artwork by the artist Severin Krön. The pieces are made of squares that can be rotated or moved at will, and whatever the arrangement of the modules, the links of the composition hold. Nine squares yield more than 95 billion compositions. Not only are the images rotatable and permutable — the sound is too. The position of the images governs the sequencing of the music, and rotating an image changes the sound.

The sounds loop over a background score. The work also lets you save the current configuration and pick it up the next time the software starts, export a composed image for your own use, zoom and navigate inside the composition, change the layers of the images, and permute and rotate the images at random, automatically. It works with a touchscreen too.

A work can be created to order using this system. It can be hired for an event, and it can also be bought: it is sold in an edition of three.
