Place Pradel, Lyon — Fête des Lumières, 8–11 December. The small character set at the centre of the title means “light” in Chinese. For Unicode 光 3D, Fred Sapey-Triomphe began by observing the architecture, then played with it: the geometry of the opera house dome on Place Pradel is very simple — a half-circle resting on an older building, like a construction toy in wooden pieces — and the idea of a cube followed naturally.

Its screens form a giant cube whose transparency and depth draw the viewer into the digital encoding of the world’s writing systems: bold, technically assured, graphically beautiful, random and vertiginous.
